Well, I have had more than 3 hours black out per day actually. Normally the light goes out twice a day - at least for the last 2 weeks.. ( I was out of the country until then). So I think we have at least 6-7 hours black outs per day - not counting the “on and off thing”, which is going on when the light comes back…
Today I was away the whole day and I don’t know how things were today, however the light went out a while ago, but just for 10 minutes or so.
I was wondering if somebody has more official information from Edenorte ? (Not that I thrust Edenorte - just curious to hear what they might promise) bounce

All I know Anette is that now the elections are over we are on two 3-hour powercuts a day.

It seems that now the votes are in & counted, it's "business as usual".

Yesterday's powercuts must have been caused by faults somewhere I think. Even Edeidiote must realise that if you supply NO POWER for 24 hours you will receive NO MONEY ....... then again maybe not!

This topic about Edenorte and electricity supply was started long before Christmas. At that time we were promised (again) to receive 24 hours light within a short period of time.
We are now in the month of June and apparently nothing has changed during the last 6 or 7 months. We have black outs every day and for hours ..Just like usual.. A bad quality of electricity - the light goes on and off and drives my generator and the transfer crazy.
Does any of you have any recent update of what is going on ? If anything is going on at all…

Apparently a Senator lives here, as does a Political former candidate for governor or some-such.

However we don't have the funds or will as a community to join the palm-greasing brigade ..... since that is the only way to get things done in this country*

You know Anette I think more people than we think read this page they just don't post for whatever reason which is too bad. The Forum at the very least is an informational tool.
I believe if we had more influential wealthy Dominicans living in Costambar we would have as much power as anyone else but I agree with you they don't move to Costambar, why would they when they can live in Ballardo and Torealta. Costambar is basically a foreign community.

I understand your opinion. However Costambar does not belong to the wealthy communities really.
There are several communities with much wealthier families than Costambar and most wealthy Dominican families would NEVER come of the idea to move to Costambar EVER.
It does not help that you like Costambar and I like Costamber.. You need some wealthy Dominican families to like Costambar too and that is not easily going to happen at all.
(I assure you that far from every foreigner is spending 2.500 US$ per month - not here and not even half that amount)

It is a bad circle.. The authorities do not care about us - we are simply not important to them at all and therefore the bad service. Any foreign (serious) investor will run away, when he realizes the problems we have here.. 2 abandoned hotels looking like shit (sorry the word), too many not paved streets , a prostitution hotel and bar in the middle of everything and the trash at street borders .. We have over hundred abandoned properties I was told and every second house has a “for sale” sign at the entrance.. And the black outs and NO decent water supply.

The mentality here is different - they just don’t think like you and me and specially not the politicians They want money and every investor has to bribe everybody around him to get things done.. Los Mangos was asked for two hundreds thousand dollars if they expect the authorities to help get their land cleared along the river between Costambar and Cofresi. There is ONE man having a huge vegetable garden right at the mangroves (at the river) . He is a friend of the people in City Hall and apparently nobody touches this man… Yes, if you pay two hundred thousand dollars .. They are still filling the river up with materials a little further down from Lóase and nobody is doing anything - oh yes, if you pay two hundred thousand dollars.. There are still 5 illegal houses at the river close to Lóase etcetera… Los Mangos does not want to close that path really - they just want to clean their land and make it look nice - install a gate at the beginning of the path with guards and let the people walk there during the day - controlled.
Said all this:
The only way to force somebody to do something is making SOMETHING BIG to embarrass the politicians - internationally - according to my humble opinion..
And you could bring in the local workers here - specially now with the bad tourist situation and every second person in Puerto Plata is without work..

Ideas and ideas - however only very VERY few people are even reading this page.. We will not get very far this way.. Where are the interested people??? Question

PostSubject: Value of Costambar   Wed Nov 30, 2011 11:05 pm

Has anyone ever tried to come up with a value on what Costambar contributes to the DR ?

Most foreigners here live on pension and/or foreign investment income. We spend pretty well all of it in the country. Assuming that there are about 400 foreigners living here and that a reasonable guess as to average income remitted here would be about $2,500 per month, then we are talking about a total of $12 MILLION (RD $450million) coming into the country annually, all of which is spent locally. We also employ lots of people. Then add what the snowbirds and other tourists spend here. I could not guess the numbers here, maybe someone else has a better idea, but the point I am trying to make is that a foreign resident contributes an enormous amount, as compared to an all-inclusive tourist. So if you want to get the authorities attention, including the Prezzy, then you have to show how much we contribute. Foreign residents are stable, consistent, create jobs, directly and indirectly, contribute to charities and are a great source of income. The government should be encouraging more people to settle here instead of harrassing us via Edenorte and other irrritations..maybe they could even create a minister for foreign pensioners! Another cushy job but at least a voice for us, who are presently very much sidelined in the push for tourism.

Maybe if we got some more hard numbers, we could actually present a case to the pols, including Prezzy via a public letter. If they want us out they will lose $12mm + about 400-500 jobs. I am sure our workers would support any case we make so they can keep their jobs!

No Suzanne, I don’t think they live in Costambar. They just know, who is late with their payments , because their accounting program is working just fine.. The problem with Edenorte is political and they do provide electricity for the people, who are political interesting to them..

According to my humble opinion Edenorte is an institution created to benefit the politicians in one way or another. It is a waste of money and Edenorte should not even exist. The electricity should be delivered directly from the electrical companies to the consumers and it would be much more efficient and much cheaper. Just look at Punta Cana: They have a private electricity company and it works just fine..

Edenorte is a perfect place to create the political “bottles” - a lot of people from the political party in charge have jobs and salaries. The Government changes and all the employees get changed too.. It is like everything else in this country : they make politics out of everything .

The problem with the electricity we can only change if we make a really big thing out of it and the people in Costambar are not willing to gather and stick together . As long as it is about egos and who is better than the other, the residence in Costambar will run in many different directions instead of doing one big thing TOGETHER..
It would be relatively easy to cut the street and avoid San Felipe to get fuel for a couple of days for example. Involve the embassies and consulates of the different countries we represent. Write very big news paper ads in important news papers. I this way we would get electricity for 24 hours very quickly, because the Government does not want those kind of problems and embarrassments.
However - this will never happen. Most people expect everybody else to do the job.. And the 3 different groups in charge of Costambar will run in 3 different directions - each of them looking for their own personal star..
Personally I don’t see a solution - and I just love my generator ! bounce

Thank you for the information Annette.
Do you happen to know whether the person or persons who cut the electricity live in Costambar they are so....on top of doing that, it almost seems that they wait for the morning of the cutoff day and run to cut the elctric. If they were as effiscient in giving us power we would indeed be sitting pretty.

Well, I don’t know if it has anything to do with the rain, but we had a very long black out today Sunday - from very early in the morning.
I realized that Edenorte was working at Calle Sanchez fixing some wires and transformers today Sunday.. So maybe they are indeed working…They are normally nowhere to be found on a Sunday..
But especially the equipment at Calle Sanchez is horrible old, with wires hanging everywhere and an old dangerous transformer, which is always making a lot of noise.. clown

I just want to ad, that I have the same black outs as anybody else (off course) It must have been a mistake, that they provided “my” part of Costambar with light during almost 24 hours for ONE day. We are back to “normal” again Mad

PostSubject: Re: Edenorte - LIGHT   Fri Nov 11, 2011 6:45 pm

Well, I DID go to the meeting at 10 A.M.
Actually they organized the meeting for the people, who owe money to Edenorte in order to be able to negotiate some kind of payments for the debts. Nobody else needed to bring a contract..

I asked Edenorte how it is possible to owe a huge amount of money, because they always cut the light at once if you do not pay your bill. Well, I learned something I didn’t really understood before:
Edenorte has a very stupid rule. They cut your light if you don’t pay, but they DO NOT cancel your contract.
We all know, that there are abandoned properties in Costambar - people, who passed away for example. After many years some properties are sold and the new owners are not clever enough to check if the property has any debts. Maybe a house was empty for 10 years - so the contract with Edenorte with the basic amount to pay monthly has been active the whole time, without being paid. Edenorte claims the money from the new owners and most of them refuse to pay.
They claim to have around 138 cases like this and that is the reason, why they always say Costambar has a deficit...

I suggested them to change that rule and automatically cancel the contract if the bills have not been paid for 3 months. But I just got this look from empty faces …They sent two not very competent girls and one of them started to argue with the people instead of just to listen to us..

Another problem is apparently with some apartment buildings. Each apartment has a meter, however they cut the whole building if just one apartment is not paying.. Another weird idea.

They told us the same as many times before: They are working at it - they would love to give us 24 hours light and they are installing new lines in Costambar in order to take everything out of the ground. I heard that 20 times before..
I know they are working in Costambar, but I cannot guarantee they are doing what they told they would do.

One weird thing is the fact, that since that meeting I had only 1 hour black out.. I have had light ever since.. I guess it is a mistake, because twice I realized that Costambar was without light, however the area where I live had light. Maybe they forget a switcher - he he.

Well Suzanne ......

At 7.30 the night before the power went out, as scheduled, but between then & when the meeting started we only had 1 1/2 hours power overnight. The power then stayed on for the full duration of the meeting.

This was obviously some cynical publicity stunt by them & I for one didn't fall for it.

I didn't go .........

P.S.
Does anybody know where I can buy 10 cheap solar panels? Wink

Unfortunately it is kind of late to get the information about the meeting. I have some appointments that Thursday and I cannot go.

On the other hand it is kind of weird to ask us to bring our last paid electrical bill.. I mean, Edenorte must really know, who is paying and who is not paying.
If their accounting system is good enough to know exactly, who did not pay on time and consequently cut the light AT ONCE , they should really know who is paying, without having us all make copies of our paid bills..

According to the same accounting system they MUST also know, who is owing money from the past time and fix that problem directly with the people involved..

Or they are completely incompetent or they must think we are all completely stupid! So they will have an fantastic excuse, that not enough people showed up and therefore they cannot provide us with 24 hours light …..

Sorry, I really think that every effort done by our community to find solutions to our problems is to appreciate - I just cannot avoid being suspicious. And this one is a weird one Very Happy

Even if bills are owed they are willing to make payment arrangements. This may be the first opportunity in a long time to get better sevice. They´ve already written off very old past dues of millions of pesos.

This Thursday, 10th November, between 10am & 4pm Edenorte will be at Atlantic one .

They say if enough people turn up with copies of their latest PAID bills they will give us 24 hour power!

Even if we just get 20hours that would be progress!

Make a date in your diaries. If you are abroad maybe get whoever is looking after your accounts to show up with the bills.

Thank you very much for the detailed information about the meetings with Edenorte - very kind of you to share the information with the rest of us. It would be just wonderful if more people involved in stuff in Costambar would do like you do = share the information with ALL of us.

Well, I understand that Edenorte have not changed much and it is indeed frustrating. Just like Bob I cannot figure out WHY they treat us like this. Maybe they are just incompetent and disorganized . They are used to do their work in a specific way and they cannot change.
If only Costambar would have the problem I would say it is because we are mainly foreigner, without the right to vote. However they have the same problem from the entrance of Puerto Plata ( La Javilla) all the way to Altamira - except for Cofresi..

To show a picture of a (illegal) connection of the light at the main gate is very stupid. How much electricity can a few lights possibly consume? Just another excuse.
I remember a few months ago, Los Mangos had their black gate connected to the street lights and Edenorte came almost every day to cut of the energy. Los Mangos had asked for a meter a long time before, but nobody came to install the meter.. It took around 6 months for them to solve the problem. This is ridiculous!

I know I suggested this before for other issues, however I still think we should post a complaint - big BIG in a bigger news paper like Listin Diario - one whole page, asking the President if he wants us all to leave or if he wants us to tell all possible foreign investors to stay away, because things like 12 hours black out in the year of 2011 is just unacceptable. I would be happy to pay for part of a news paper page for that purpose. Maybe the Junta de Vecinos would organize something like this please ?

Gus,
Thank you for the info on Edenorte. It seems that there are no valid reasons for Costambar's poor treatment at the hands of the electric company. So it is natural to ask: "Why?". The answer could be monetary. While I can't figure out why this should be so, my experiences here in the DR have shown that money is at the root of many of the injustices visited upon the populace, be they Dominican or foreign.

The "brains" behind EDEIDIOTE don't realise THEY are losing money HAHAHAHA

PostSubject: EDENORTE   Fri Oct 14, 2011 12:06 pm

Junta de Vecinos has met three times in the past month and a half with EDENORTE. We showed them an analysis from their own data published on the internet, that they lose less power in the circuit that includes Costambar and Cafemba, than they lose in the circuits that include Cofresi, Bayrdo and Star Hills. Their first reaction was to say that the information on the internet is wrong. When pressed further they came with another nonsensical mumbo jumbo and, fianally, they stated that the problem with Costambar was millions of pesos of past debt. We were able to convince them that they need to take off the bad debts, the majority of which comes from people who have been dead for years, and now that is off the table as an argument. Then they promised that they would install a measuring devise to calculate only the Costambar loses. Their excuse now is that they don´t have the devise available. Their latest story is that somehow they determined that their loss in Costambar, without Cafemba is about 28% (the difference between what they send and what they bill). However, the total loss of the circuit last month was only 7% with Costambar having 70% of the circuit's users. We have now a meeting pending with the engineer who gave us the report to ask him to explain how it is mathematically possible such calculation, especially since there is no measuring device installed. Finally, at the last meeting, they showed us a picture of a power line connected directly (allegedly illegally) from a light post to power the lamps at the main gate of Costambar which is managed by APC. The engineer told us he had given the order to cut it off, but did not know if it had been done
