We are all hopefully aware of the risks of buying a used vehicle in the DR. We are currently looking to replace our ageing car and were offered a low mileage 2011 model SUV. Everything locally checked out but since the car was imported from the US I checked the VIN in the US government records of stolen and damaged cars. And presto, I found that this car was written off by an insurance company as a result of damage incurred during Hurricane Sandy. It was subsequently rebuilt, the odometer reset and then exported to the DR. The car looks OK but is not insurable in the US or DR. So always check the VIN record before you buy!
